Description

This newer addition to the P Mauriat range comes in with a more contemporary-focused sound, aligning very well with jazz and pop styles of music

Finished in a beautiful cognac lacquer, this new professional model in the P Mauriat range not only slots in at a more affordable price point, but it also benefits from an improved ergonomic key action. The right and left-hand stack key layouts and palm key heights have been slightly altered to follow the optimum curve of the average hand. The Grand Dreams tenor retains that classic P Mauriat strong core tone but features a brighter ‘front’ to each note, giving it the flexibility to move through from straight jazz to more contemporary styles.

Staff Review

There are lots of good things to say about this horn. In a similar vein to the alto Grand Dreams, the tenor model drives the sound forward with an immediate focus to each note as opposed to containing the big spread and chunkiness that the 76/66 models offer. I find that it doesn’t have the same absolute power as the latter two, but its focus and sweetness make up for this and allow the sound to project despite being slightly down on the decibel gauge. While having this slightly more pointed and focused sound there is no avoiding that trademark P Mauriat quality of overall tone, which is layered, characterful, and, quite frankly, sensual.

The action is smooth and well-measured, the pads making a satisfying thud when they contact the tone holes. The table key arrangement pleases me – often poorly designed with too many gaps between the keys; with this model, it is very easy to negotiate all 4 buttons and move from C# to B without getting stuck! Palm key heights for me hit the mark too – often manufacturers make them stick out too much or tuck them in too much! To round off the whole thing the cognac lacquer is highly appealing to my eye. Its smooth sophisticated honey gold vibe is similar to that of a Reference 54 alto and makes this model stand out from the crowd just that little bit more! Jim Cheek
