Staff Reviews

Jim Cheek - Director
"Having had a blow on the Seles Axos this afternoon, I have to say that I’m very impressed with it. For me, it has a medium resistance, typical of Selmer saxes in general – this sax will be heavily compared with YAS62 and AW01 as it’s in the same price bracket, and having played a few phrases on all three back to back you really notice that the two Japanese models have a lot more ‘pop’ and ‘ripeness’ to the sound, generally their sound is very immediate. The Axos has a little more resistance, and as a result that iconic ‘Selmer sound’ comes out – having compared it to both Series II and III you can hear the difference, although to me it’s much closer to a Series II, but perhaps without the same drive and absolute fullness, however, it’s very close. My immediate reaction was that I felt like I was playing on a Selmer Paris saxophone, but for only two thirds the price, which is really impressive! They have managed to retain that depth of tone and lushness that you associate with French Selmer."

"It is interesting to see a brand as established as Selmer broadening out to the entry pro level. I do feel the Selmer Seles alto really does bring something new to the table which it principal competitors, the Yamaha YAS 62 and Yanagisawa AW01, do not have.

The Seles has all the good qualities of a Selmer sax; the key work, layout and the ‘Selmer sound’ ; these really have been crafted into this horn. Personally I found it darker than the Yani and also slightly smoother. The classical fraternity will be able to relate to it immediately and I can see it being a hit with the jazz community too (there’s a lot of the Super Action 80 here). A very enjoyable instrument to play and had a fantastic response to everything I threw at it, especially in the altissimo register.

Overall I feel Selmer have done more than enough to compete and create a sax at the same price bracket as the Yamaha 62 and the Yanagisawa AW01. It should really make people re-consider their options when upgrading their student instrument’.

Anyone looking for to move on from their student sax really owes it to themselves to trying out one of the Seles Axos- not only a great sax but one offering something distinctly different from the pack. A very classy addition to our range."
